How to Rig Spinning Poles for Northern Pike Fishing
Northern pike can grow to be longer than 40 inches and, in some cases, can weigh 30 or 40 pounds. And while the average northern pike that anglers catch weighs between about 3 and 5 pounds, they often are thought of as fish that require heavy tackle. However, properly rigged spinning rods and reels can also be used for northern pike fishing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need:
  • Spinning rod and reel 10- to 15-pound test fishing line Steel leader Pike lures
  • Spinning rod and reel
  • 10- to 15-pound test fishing line
  • Steel leader
  • Pike lures
Step 1

Select a spinning reel that is capable of holding at least 200 yards of 10-pound test line and attach the reel to the rod.

Step 2

Spool 10- to 15-pound test line on the fishing rod and reel. Make sure to fill the spool with line, but quit adding line when it is 1/8th of an inch below the rim of the reel spool.

Step 3

Tie a 12- to 18-inch steel leader onto the end of the fishing line. Northern pike have a mouth full of sharp teeth, so a steel leader is necessary to prevent the fish from biting through your line.

Step 4

Attach a pike lure to the end of the leader. Good lures on which attach to fish spinning rods include jigs tipped with soft plastic shad or twister tails, spinnerbaits, spoons, and shallow-diving crankbaits.
