Scuba Diving Fins Review

Long blade diving fins
Long blade diving fins
Scuba diving fins come in hundreds of configurations and designs, and the manufacturer of each promises different benefits from using its products. Despite the bewildering array of fins on the market, the type of diving you prefer will dictate the best gear for your needs. In reality, there are only three basic types of scuba fin, and each is suited to a different aspect of the diving sport: adjustable-strap fins, full-foot fins and long-blade fins for free diving. Each has its perks and sacrifices.
Perks

Adjustable-strap fins (open heel) are the most versatile. The adjustable strap allows you to slip the fins over a thermal dive suit. Full-foot fins slip over the entire foot like a shoe. They are used by snorkelers and shallow divers for their convenience and ease of use. Long-blade fins are popular with free divers because the design provides extra power and more thrust from every kick.

Sacrifices

Adjustable-strap fins are typically more expensive. Full-foot fins are heavier, which increases drag resistance while swimming underwater. Long-blade fins are uniquely suited to the extreme sport of free diving. Scuba divers may not need the thrust of a long-blade fin, as much of their diving may be devoted to leisurely exploration and enjoying the underwater vistas.

Bottom Line

Snorkelers and shallow divers will benefit the most from full-foot fins. Serious scuba divers will appreciate the versatility of adjustable-strap fins that fasten above the heel. Free divers and scuba divers who need speed and power will find long-blade fins better suited to their diving needs.
