How to Put a Fishing Line on a Zebco 404

The Zebco 404 is a popular spincast reel. That type of reel is most often used by beginning anglers, since spincasters are simpler to use--and typically cheaper-- than both spinning and baitcasting reels. Like the other reels, Zebco 404 spincast reels can be used with fishing lines in varying sizes and be used to catch multiple species of fish.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Things You'll Need:
  • Zebco 404 spincast reel Rod Fishing line Scissors or fingernail clipper
  • Zebco 404 spincast reel
  • Rod
  • Fishing line
  • Scissors or fingernail clipper
Step 1

Attach the Zebco 404 to a fishing rod. The rod should be made to hold spincast reels. The easiest way to tell if it is: Make sure there is a trigger-shaped handle that hangs below the reel seat.

Step 2

Remove the reel face of the Zebco 404 by unscrewing it from the body of the reel.

Step 3

Grab hold of the fishing line and thread it through the line guide at the end of the fishing line. Then thread it through each of the next line guides.

Step 4

Thread the line through the hole at the front of the reel face.

Step 5

Attach the line to the Zebco 404 spool. Wrap it around the spool, then tie a knot so the line is tight against the spool. Take a scissors or fingernail clipper and trim excess line that extends above the knot, but retain about one-eighth of an inch of line.

Step 6

Screw the face of the reel back onto the main body of the reel.

Step 7

Turn the reel handle in a clockwise direction to add fishing line onto the reel. Put line on until it is about one-eighth of an inch below the rim of the reel spool.

Step 8

Cut the line 10 inches beyond the tip of the fishing rod.
