How to Measure Downhill Skis
Each type of skiing needs different kinds of skis. Downhill skiing requires the use of downhill skis. It is important to know how to measure the length of your skis in order to determine the right size for you. Typically, ski length is measured in centimeter measurements that are made in two different ways. Downhill skis are measured by just the flat part of the ski or by the length of the ski from one end to the other. Once you have learned how to measure your downhill skis, you can start looking for skis to purchase at various outdoor sporting goods stores.

Step 1
Take measurements of your own weight and height in centimeters using a tape measure and bathroom scale. The information is key to figuring out which type of downhill ski is best for you along with the measurements of the skis themselves.
Step 2
Measure the skis' length to check against your own height. Place the tape measure on one end of the ski and stretch it down to the other end, noting the measurement in centimeters. Compare your height with the length of the ski, so you can determine the longest ski that you can effectively control.
Step 3
Measure the width at three points on the skis that you are considering. You should measure the tip, the waist and the tail of the ski. You will need to find the right combination for you. If the waist is narrow, you will turn better, but if the waist is wider, you will glide effortlessly on powder snow.
Step 4
Measure the sidecut radius. This will require a circle that fits snugly into the waist of the ski. The sidecut radius determines how quickly you can complete a turn.
