Located in the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, Gatlinburg is a four-season vacation destination. The town was settled in the early 1800s. While it boasts an infinite variety of modern attractions, Gatlinburg still retains some of its historic character. Although Gatlinburg is located in the south, it still gets snow in the winter, which makes it perfect for winter sport
vacations. However, since temperatures rarely drop below 34 degrees, you can enjoy winter activities without enduring the sub-zero temperatures typical of more northern regions.
The Gatlinburg Winter Magic
The Smokey Mountain Winterfest is one of the most popular January events in Gatlinburg. During this festivals, millions of lights illuminate the city. There's an annual chili cook-off, a Miss Winter Pageant and all sorts of musical entertainment.
Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort
Ober Gatlinburg is a small ski resort. It has two beginner runs, two intermediate runs and two advanced runs. In January, the resort hosts the annual Winter Special Olympics. You can get inspired as you watch and cheer the Special Olympics athletes competing for the gold.
Trolley Rides of Light
Between Jan. 5 and Jan. 25, you can experience the Trolley Tour of Lights, which features a guided trolley tour through the Gatlinburg Winter Magic lighting displays. Tours depart from the Mass Transit Trolley Center at the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum.
