Replacing the battery in your first generation iPod Nano may seem like a challenging task at first. However, once you understand the basic process and acquire the necessary tools, it becomes much simpler. Replacing your iPod Nano battery yourself instead of paying a professional technician can save you a lot of money and won't take much time at all. Some basic soldering is required for this repair, so if you have never used a soldering iron before, you should seek professional assistance.

Step 1
Purchase a replacement battery for your iPod. Replacement batteries can be purchased online at .ipodjuice.com/ipod-nano-battery-replacement-products.htm or from Amazon.com (amazon.com/Li-Ion-Replacement-Battery-Apple-iPod/dp/B000QEFA9G).
Step 2
Purchase an iPod opening tool. These can be found online at sourcingmap.com/repair-screwdriver-opening-tools-kit-for-apple-iphone-ipod-nds-psp-p-17489.html and rapidrepair.com/shop/1050-safe-open-case-tool.html, as well as some retail stores that sell electronics accessories.
Step 3
Slide your iPod opening tool between the top and bottom portions of the case. Move the tool all the way around the iPod to release the clips that hold the iPod together. Separate the iPod into two parts with the insides facing up.
Step 4
Remove the tape covering the only three wires connected to the battery, taking care not to pull the wires too hard. Make note of which cable connects to which solder point.
Step 5
Touch the solder points at the end of each cable with the tip of your hot soldering iron. Heat the solder points one at a time until the wires can be pulled free.
Step 6
Remove the old battery pack and discard appropriately. Take note of how the battery was positioned.
Step 7
Put the new battery pack in place. Connect the new wires one at a time in the same order as they were connected before.
Step 8
Heat the solder already on the first solder point, while holding the end of one wire near the solder point. Once the solder melts, simply insert the cable and hold it in place until firmly attached. Repeat this process with the other two wires. Close and charge the iPod.
