Those who live in or visit the Charleston, South Carolina, area who want to eat at an original restaurant are often able to do so thanks to the number of restaurants that are located in the city. Because of its proximity to the ocean, Charleston has a number of well-reviewed seafood restaurants, along with many types of other restaurants--including those that serve traditional Southern-style cuisine.
Anson Restaurant
Those in Charleston who want to get a taste of the South may want to visit Anson Restaurant. This establishment--which is located in the oldest part of the city--features a classic Southern interior, attractive wooden chairs and tables and Southern wall art and designs. According to USA Today, "For dining, Anson is the talk of the town." Diners at Anson can choose from a number of classic appetizers while they wait for their meals. Some of the appetizers found here that are more difficult to find in other parts of the country include fried okra, roasted oyster, cracklin' calamari, and shrimp and grits. A couple of the entrees that guests may order include country fried local pork steak and rack of lamb.

Hyman's Seafood
Hyman's Seafood is a popular restaurant in Charleston, but those who visit the establishment often come for more than just the food. Hyman's also features a gift shop where guests can buy Hyman's-related merchandise such as shirts and hats. Publications like the New York Times have said that Hyman's offers ". . . great Southern cuisine with impeccable service." Some of the classic Southern items guests here can order include fried green tomatoes, shrimp and pups, and gator sausage. Some of the seafood dishes guests can order at Hyman's include buffalo-style oysters, king crab, calamari, and Charleston salmon and grits.

Hank's Seafood Restaurant
Hank's Seafood Restaurant also features Southern food and seafood, but it exudes a different kind of ambiance than the other restaurants listed here. The restaurant is located in a turn-of-the-century warehouse that overlooks Charleston's Historic Market area. The restaurant is open for dinner every night, starting at 5 p.m. Hank's offers guests soups such as Charleston she crab soup and cold appetizers such as tuna tartar. The restaurant also has a raw bar from which guests can order Gulf oysters and crab fingers. The chef's specialties include dishes such as buttermilk fried chicken and roasted salmon.
