A weekend trip can't be beat for spending time together. It's a great chance to refresh yourselves and create memories as a family. And since you're only traveling for the weekend, it's a great chance to explore locally. Weekend trips are also short enough that you needn't worry too much about packing all your gear, just toss some basics in a bag, pick up the kids from school and hit the road.
Fort Bragg, California
Slip in a little education along with family time. In Northern California, visit historic Fort Bragg, on the Mendocino coast line. Not only is it beautiful country, it provides a chance to talk about the logging industry in California and during whale migration season, it's a great place to watch for whales. You can ride the Skunk Train to view the redwoods, take a bike ride and paddle at the beach (don't plan to swim though, it's too cold). The Beachcomber hotel fronts onto the ocean and provides a good spot for families to stay.

If you live within driving distance of the Big Apple, weekends are a delightful time to spend there as a family. Tour the Empire State Building, climb the steps of the Statue of Liberty, watch the Yankees play in the new stadium and visit the Children's Museum of Manhattan. There's an abundance of places to stay in New York, though the Belvedere Hotel has a small refrigerator, microwave and sink, which can be convenient.

Dude Ranch
Live like a cowboy for the weekend by heading to a Dude Ranch, living out on the range (or at least spend some time in the saddle) with your kids. Sundance Trail Guest Ranch in Colorado offers weekend getaways where you can fish, ride trail and stay in cabins that are devoid of TV, computers and modern technology, so you have a chance to interact with your family.
