Atlanta Field Trip Ideas

Atlanta is filled with a number of historic and educational sites. Many of these sites are well suited to field trips by school groups. In particular, the Jimmy Carter Library, the Martin Luther King Historic Site and the Georgia Aquarium can be very informative and entertaining, especially for elementary and middle school students.
Jimmy Carter Library & Museum

The Jimmy Carter Library offers tours for school groups led by docents and has educational sessions of various content for all grade levels. Reservations for a field trip should be made at least one month in advance. Until October 1, 2009, the museum is closed for a large scale renovation.

Martin Luther King, Jr National Historic Site

The Martin Luther King Historic Site includes tours and presentations on the civil rights marches of the 1960s. Included at the site are numerous photos and pieces of memorabilia from Dr. King's life. Also, the Martin Luther King birthplace and childhood home is available to tour.

Georgia Aquarium

The Aquarium opened in late 2005 and is one of the largest aquariums in the US. It has about 8 million gallons of tanks with a variety of salt water and fresh water fish and aquatic life. A large portion of the Aquarium is devoted to educational activities and it is therefore well suited for field trips.
