Frugal Family Vacation Ideas
A tight budget doesn't mean that a vacation is out of the question. In fact, it is possible to have a great holiday without spending much, as long as you are willing to try new things and abandon preconceived ideas of what time away from home should look and feel like.
Stay Close to Home
Nothing will increase your overall vacation costs as having to spend money on plane tickets for the whole family. If you have just a few days to spare for a vacation, consider setting camp at a nearby town and making the most of what the area has to offer. You can easily rent a hotel room at a local bed and breakfast or even rent an apartment for a couple of days. Then make up a list of all the surrounding attractions, from free concerts and performances in parks and libraries to kids museums, historical destinations and even playgrounds.
Consider Alternative Accommodations
Hotels can take half your budget if you'are not careful. A good option for a frugal vacation is to swap homes with friends or through an organization like Home Exchange. You could also rent an apartment (where you will also save by cooking your own meals) or go camping. You could also arrange to go on vacation with friends or visit relatives, so you can share the expenses.
Look for Unusual Destinations
Theme parks, beach resorts and other popular attractions are usually overpriced and may be difficult for a family on a budget to make it there. To save money and give your kids a taste of something different, look into original destinations, such as horse ranches, working farms, national parks or even historical landmarks. Places like Colonial Williamsburg, the Liberty Bell, the Kennedy Space Center or Mystic Seaport are all great fun and affordable.
