How to Tie a Weight on a Fishing Line

Weights on a fishing line let the bait sink to the bottom to catch bottom-dweller fish. Smaller weights are typically put on a line when the fisherman is using live bait to catch fish. These weights prevent the live bait from swimming to the surface. A commonly used small weight is called a split shot sinker. Here's how to attach the split shot to your line.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Things You'll Need:
  • Pliers Split shot sinker
  • Pliers
  • Split shot sinker
Step 1

Tie a hook to the end of your fishing line.

Step 2

Use pliers to pinch one split shot sinker to the line about one foot above the hook. Do not pinch the sinker too hard, because you can damage the line.

Step 3

If you have heavy bait on your hook, consider putting a second sinker on your line above the first.
