Many people think that with a metal detector they can instantly find a wide array of hidden treasures. Using a metal detector can be fun and financially rewarding, but you need to be patient and spend time getting used to the equipment. You also need to realize that you won't find a lot right away, but you may find enough to make some extra cash over time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step 1

Buy a quality metal detector. You don't have to spend a lot of money, but you should get one that is a name brand so you can resell it if you decide you don't want it. Buy a detector based on where you will do most of the hunting. For example, if you live near a beach, consider a waterproof detector.

Step 2

Take your metal detector in the backyard to get familiar with it. Try planting some items in your yard to see how well you find them. You may even want to have someone else hide some items to see if you can discover them.

Step 3

Hunt in areas where people commonly lose things. beaches, parking lots and heavily traveled wooded paths are good areas to explore. Also check shallow streams and other water areas where people often wet their hands and, therefore, may lose rings and jewelry.

Step 4

Sell the items you find on online auction sites or other Web sites that list items for sale. Assess any items you find to see whether there is a value for collectors.
