Texas probably isn't on your mind when considering locations for your next
beach location, but it should be. Texas is home to some of the most beautiful
beaches in the
United States. With 600 miles of shoreline, there's a location for every beach lover. Here are a few popular Texas beach destinations you should consider for your next vacation.
South Padre Island
Situated on Texas' Gulf Coast, this barrier island is a favorite spring break destination for college students. The 110-mile long island is located about 40 miles west of Harlingen, Texas, and is connected to mainland Texas by the Queen Isabella Causeway.
South Padre boasts one of the last natural seashores in the United States and an eclectic mixture of scenic landscapes and trendy tourist destinations. While there, be sure to visit the Grasslands Nature Trail, a two-mile paved trail that shows off some of the natural beauty of the island.
Galveston Island
Galveston Island is located just an hour south of Houston, making this area a haven for city-dwelling Texans and tourists alike. Beaches on the island cater to families by offering plenty of amenities, group activities and musical events. The island is even home to the world's largest sandcastle-building competitions.
Stewart Beach Park is the most well-known of Galveston Island's beaches and is an ideal destination for tourists with families. The island also boasts several smaller beaches and historical sites sure to please any member of the family.
Corpus Christi
Texans affectionately refer to Corpus Christi as the 'Heart of the Texas Gulf Coast.' Located just two hours southwest of San Antonio, Corpus Christi is home to beautiful beaches that are perfect for a day of relaxation. In addition, Corpus Christi is also home to the Texas State Aquarium, the USS Lexington aircraft carrier/museum and narrated cruises that take passengers on a scenic trip through the Corpus Christi bay and harbor.
Port Aransas/Mustang Island
Just 30 minutes east from Corpus Christi is the beautiful and relaxing Port Aransas on Mustang Island. While at Port Aransas, be sure to visit the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a state-run collection of trails, nature preserves and bird sanctuaries that runs the entire length of the Texas Gulf Coast.
