Considered the second-largest barrier island on the east coast, Hilton Head Island covers 12 miles along the coast and is five miles in width. The island is split nearly in two by water that runs into Calibogue Sound. The regular population is 33,800, increasing on average by 1,000 per year. Hilton Head Island draws nearly 2.25 million visitors each year.

Hilton Head Island is located just off the coast of the southeastern United States. It is part of Beaufort County, South Carolina. The entire island is considered a town of the same name.
