The Best Sunny Places to Vacation in December
While most people in December are bundled up, preparing for the holiday season, it can be very tempting to flee the cold weather and crowded shops in favor of a sunny vacation. Luckily, there are a number of different places to choose from, be it a tropical island or a country on the other side of the equator, where December just means more sunshine.
While half of the world is bundling up against the cold in December, it is the beginning of summer in Australia. Consider going down under and enjoying the warm weather in Sydney. If you have the time, consider heading up Australia's Gold Coast. Brisbane has some fantastic beaches and is nicknamed "Bris Vegas," because of all the theme parks and other night life there. Don't forget to also check out Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef.
New Zealand is another country where people shed their winter clothes in December. December is the perfect time to sleep under the stars and go tramping through some of New Zealand's famed hiking trails. It's also a great time to try your hand at sea kayaking around New Zealand's beautiful coastline and visit some of New Zealand's fantastic beaches.
Winter in Hawaii generally differs from summer by only about five to ten degrees, making for a lovely, mild winter. Soak up some sunshine on one of the islands' many beaches, or consider getting out on the water and kayaking or snorkeling. December is also the beginning of whale season, making it an excellent time to take in a whale-watching tour.
December is an excellent time to visit the Caribbean. It's still early in the season, so it won't be as busy. The rainy season ends in November, so you won't have to worry about inclement weather. Instead, just lie back on one of the many white sand beaches, or even take a boat tour and enjoy the beautiful turquoise waters. You might even want to consider visiting a number of different islands on a Caribbean cruise.
For a real adventure, you could take a trip down to the Galapagos Islands, where the weather is just transitioning from winter to summer in December. Amongs the many varieties of wildlife you'll see during this transition time is the giant Galapagos tortoise eggs beginning to hatch and the waved albatross as they begin to leave the islands.
