London in the winter is deceptively cold. While it does not snow often, it is windy and damp. Consequently, a heavy coat, a hat, water resistant gloves and an umbrella are all very useful. Wool is especially useful in England, as it repels water well but does not cause the sticky feeling of a polyester raincoat or slicker.
A Wool Coat
A three-quarter length wool coat will keep you warm through almost any London winter day. The English tend to favor dark and mute colors, so if you want to blend in, black or grey are good choices. The wool coat will protect against most rain and moisture but an umbrella is also very useful to keep dry.
A Warm Scarf
Scarfs add a remarkable amount of warmth considering they cover little more than the neck. Cashmere is especially soft, plus it is very warm. Wool, however, can serve the purpose well and it is less expensive.
A Hat
The body loses more heat through the head than any other part, so a hat can improve warmth considerably. The type of hat is a matter of personal taste, but something that covers the ears is especially nice in the wind.
An Umbrella
Because it does rain often in London, it makes sense to bring an umbrella. Buy a small one that will fit in your purse or backpack, so you will always be prepared for a shower.
