How to Get a United States Passport

Getting a United States passport involves only a few simple steps. When attempting to get a passport for the first time, you must apply in person.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step 1

Fill out the passport application, which is Form DS-11. You can complete the form online, but it cannot be submitted online.

Step 2

Sign and date the form after you have printed it out.

Step 3

Obtain proof of your citizenship. A copy of a birth certificate will fulfill this requirement.

Step 4

Have your passport photos taken. If possible, do this at the local passport office. If this is not possible, photo centers or office supply stores will do this for you.

Step 5

Use the link in the References section below to find a passport office near you.

Step 6

Take identification, such as a driver's license, with you to the passport office.

Step 7

Pay passport fees. Information about fees can be found at the U.S. Department of State's website or from the staff at the passport office.

Step 8

Take the application, birth certificate, photos, identification and fees to the passport office. It will take several weeks for your passport to arrive in the mail.
