Best Top Rope Rock Climbing in the Southeast
The top roping technique used in rock climbing has a long and proud history because it is safer for the climber and the rocks. Some locales in the Southeast boast some of the best rock for top rope climbing. From mountains with clean white sandstone to exposed whiteside granite that is more than 390 million years old, climbers rave about these rocks offering the best top rope climbing in the Southeast.
Quartzite Rock - Moore's Wall
Moore's Wall
Moore's Wall near Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is credited with some of the earliest climbing in North Carolina. The first recorded ascent was logged in 1959. With its steep granite face, Moore's Wall is a southern classic. One of the favorite routes is Zoo View. According to the "Select Climbs Guide," this is "possibly the best 5.7 in North Carolina." Tim Toula, in his book "Rock 'N' Road," writes, "The routes at Moore's Wall are better than hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a full count."
Exposed Whiteside Granite - Looking Glass Rock
Looking Glass Rock by Bruce Willey
Formed 390 million years ago, Looking Glass Rock is near Brevard, North Carolina. Among the exfoliating granite domes, water grooves, slabs, overhangs, dihedrals, walls and the signature "eye-brows" (short round horizontal cracks), there are routes for climbers of all levels. Some cracks are even reminiscent of Yosemite. Looking Glass's signature route, The Nose, was developed in the late 1960s.
White Sandstone - Sunset Rock
Sunset Rock
Located in the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Forest near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Sunset Rock is one of the oldest and most established climbing destinations. The hard-layered sandstone and steep cracks offer some of the best rock climbing in the United States. The Southeastern Climbers Coalition credits park ranger Dennis Curry with helping to keep this gem open to all climbers. Civil War soldiers stood atop the 80-foot cliff.
