Chicago has plenty to offer year round, but there are a few special activities for March. Chicago's March weather fluctuates from snowstorms to 70-degree sunny days, so bring a variety of clothing to allow you to participate in all Chicago has to offer whether sun, rain or snow is in the forecast. Although St. Patrick's Day events tend to dominate the March calendar, there are still plenty of other activities and events on hand.
St. Patrick's Day Parade
New Orleans has Mardi Gras, but Chicago has St. Patrick's Day. Traditionally, there were two St. Patrick's Day parades but as of 2009 the 31-year-old South Side parade was eliminated. However, the downtown parade continues as usual on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day (March 17) or on St. Patrick's Day if it falls on a Saturday. The parade runs from Columbus Drive and Balbo, then continues north on Columbus to Monroe. Step off is at noon.
Dyeing the Chicago River Green
On the day of the parade, the Chicago River is dyed a bright Kelly green at 10:45 a.m. The best place to view the river is downtown on Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, although you will get a lovely view from any of the many bridges that cross the Chicago River.
Chicago Flower and Garden Show
