Replacing the Manual Vent Cover on RVs

A recreational vehicle (RV) typically has at least one manual rooftop vent and often has two or more. These vents have covers that require replacement periodically. Plastic vent covers can only take so much of the sun's ultraviolet rays before becoming weakened or damaged. The vent covers get very brittle and can easily disintegrate. Hailstorms can also crack or break vent covers. Old vent covers will not prevent water damage and should be replaced periodically.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Things You'll Need:
  • Extension Ladder (optional) Screwdriver (optional)
  • Extension Ladder (optional)
  • Screwdriver (optional)
Step 1

Manually open the vent cover a few inches from inside the RV. If your RV does not have a ladder attached, place an extension ladder securely up to the side of the RV.

Step 2

Extend the ladder at least two feet above the roof. This allows you to easily get to the vent cover, and gives you something to hold onto when getting down from the roof. Carefully make your way to the rooftop vent.

Step 3

Look for hinge pins holding the vent cover in place. There may only be one, depending on the specific type. The cover could also be held on with screws.

Step 4

Take the pins out and remove any screws. Check the ends of the hinge for tabs holding it in place.

Step 5

Bend these tabs up (straighten them) to release the vent cover. Carefully remove the vent cover from the hinge.

Step 6

Purchase the correct replacement cover. There are several varieties, so it is important to find the right one. Make note of the hinge style. Take the vent cover with you to an RV repair store to match it correctly with a new one. Or look online for a vent cover that has the same hinge style.

Step 7

Put the new vent cover in place. Reverse the removal steps to replace it -- bend the tabs back in position and replace the pins.
