How to Renew a US Passport By Mail

As you are making plans to travel to another country, make sure that your passport has not expired. An expired passport can cause big problems once you arrive at your destination

If your passport has expired, renewing it is easy and you may even be able to renew it by mail.

Step 1

Make sure you qualify for mail renewal.

Before you send your documents off in the mail, make sure that you are eligible for renewal by mail. You may renew your passport through the mail if all of the following are correct:
Your passport is in good condition and is able to be sent with your application
You received your passport when you were 16 or older
Your passport was issued within the last 15 years
You are using the name you used when you received your previous passport, or you can show legal proof of a name change

If any fail to meet one of these requirements, you must renew your passport in person.

Step 2

Complete form DS-82.

Form DS-82 is the Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail. You can download the form at, or pick up a copy at an Acceptance Facility or Passport Agency.

If you fill out the form by hand, use black ink and make sure that the writing is legible. Otherwise, you may cause delays in your passport's processing time.

If you fill out the form online, print it out in black ink and on one-sided pages.

Step 3

Collect Additional Documents.

In addition to the DS-82 form, you must also submit supporting materials. These are:
Your most recent passport
Two passport photos
Passport Fees (you can find a listing of current passport fees here:
Legal proof of a name change (if applicable)

Step 4

Mail Your Materials in a Padded Envelope

After you have collected your documentation, mail it to the passport agency indicated on the form.

Because the information submitted is quite sensitive, you may want to purchase delivery confirmation so you know that your application arrived safely.

Step 5

Expedite if Necessary

If you need your passport in a hurry, include an additional $60 with the passport fee in the mailing. Make the check out to the U.S. Department of State.

You will also need to write the word "EXPEDITE" on the outside of your envelope.

Again, you may wish to use delivery confirmation so that you know your materials arrived safely.
