How to Renew a German Passport in the USA
You can renew your German passport in the United States at German missions, or diplomatic offices. Germany has nine of them in the U.S.: The embassy in Washington, and consulates in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. Each is in charge of services in a consular district. You have to file the renewal forms in person, as getting fingerprinted is now part of the process.

Step 1

Complete a passport application form (see resources to download and print).

Step 2

Include the required passport fee; only cash and money orders are accepted. The fee for renewing your German passport is:
$107 for applicants age 24 and over (valid for 10 years)
$75 for applicants under age 24 (valid for six years)
$42 for a children's passport
$60 for a temporary passport
Remember: Fees may change at any time, so check the German Missions in the United States website for up-to-date information (see resources).

Step 3

Provide two recent photos. The photos must meet strict criteria for biometrics (see resources for samples).

Step 4

Include the following documentation:
Certified copy of your birth certificate, current original passport or certified copy, copy of a U.S driver's license or utility bill to provide proof of address, and a certified copy of your marriage license, divorce decree or death certificate of your spouse if applicable. Step 5

Find the German mission nearest you. Use the interactive consulate finder (see resources). Some consulates require you to schedule an appointment before visiting; others accept walk-in applications.
