The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It has water, beautiful landscape, and history all in one--thus making it one of the best family vacation spots. There are certain things to do when planning a family vacation to the Grand Canyon. Determine how much time can be spent on vacation. Get everyone's schedules for the time allotted, and be proactive about getting convenient dates. Coordinate transportation to the Grand Canyon with hotel stay. Consider the space in the room(s) and amenities, especially when traveling with small kids. Kids may stay free in some hotel chains, so be sure to check. Calculate the costs associated with dates selected; other dates may be cheaper. Lock in dates and costs at least several months ahead. Last-minute deals are possible, but it may be risky.

Step 3

Make sure that everyone agrees with the selected excursion activities. Pick no more than five, if staying for only a few days. Try to book early, if possible, for any personalized tours. Families can take horseback rides, hiking tours and more. Check the coupon Web sites for more information. A good excursion is Petrified Forest, which has an indoor museum to learn about the unique formations as well as gift shops.

Step 4

Select appropriate clothing for the season ahead of the trip. The Grand Canyon can be very hot in the day and freezing at night in the summer, and cold all day long during the winter or fall. Dress for the season, and pack extra comforts from home. For instance, the Grand Canyon is in the middle of nowhere, so don't expect to see gas stations or restaurants nearby. If you are diabetic, you will need to bring something for the visit.

Step 5

Choose your transportation method while on vacation at the destination. Whether you are driving across the country, or flying there and taking a tour, you must know how this will influence excursions. Some tours will spend only a certain amount of time at the spot, so be careful if you want more independence on the experience. If you travel by car you can have complete control, but remember that parking may be a hassle during times when the area is crowded.
