How to Obtain a British Passport Through Marriage
If you were married to a British citizen after January 1, 1949, you are no longer eligible to receive your spouse's citizenship benefits, such as passports, through marriage. In order to be eligible to obtain a British passport, first you will have to become a naturalized citizen of the United Kingdom. This article describes the steps you will need to take to become a naturalized British citizen, as well as apply for a British passport.

Step 1

Live with your spouse in the United Kingdom for at least three years. During the first three years that you and your spouse live together in the United Kingdom, you will be ineligible to apply for British naturalization.

Step 2

Meet the requirements needed to be eligible to apply for British naturalization. To apply for British naturalization you are required to be older than 18 years of age, of sound mind and good character, able to communicate freely in English, Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic and have knowledge of life in the United Kingdom. You also must meet residential requirements and be married to, or be the civil partner of, a British citizen. A complete list of requirements can be found on the U.K. Border Agency website.

Step 3

Download and complete application form AN to apply for naturalization as a British citizen. Form AN can be obtained from the U.K. Border Agency website. You will also need to read the complete accompanying naturalization guide and sign the application to confirm that you have read it.

Step 4

Gather the supporting documents required for your naturalization application. Acceptable supporting documents include your spouse's passport or birth certificate, as well as your marriage certificate. No photocopies of official documents will be accepted. Any and all official documents included with your application will be returned to you with your naturalization certificate.

Step 5

Send your application form, supporting documents and all fees to the U.K. Border Agency. If you are mailing your application and supporting documents from the United Kingdom, mail to U.K. Border Agency, Department 1, P.O. Box 306, Liverpool, L2 0QN. If you are submitting your application from outside of the United Kingdom, you will need to send it to the nearest British diplomatic post. A complete list of British diplomatic post offices can be found on the U.K. Border Agency website. Your application for British naturalization will be processed within six months. Once you receive your British naturalization certificate, you may apply for a passport.

Step 6

Complete a passport application form. Passport application forms can be obtained from your local post office or completed and printed from the Identity and Passport Services website.

Step 7

Find someone to countersign section 10 of your passport application form as a witness. The witness must be older than 18 years old, be unrelated to you, hold a current British or Irish passport, be willing to write their passport number on your application form and be a member of a recognized profession. Step 8

Include two identical passport photos. Passport photos must be color, taken against a plain or white background and show a forward-facing view of your face. Additionally, one of your passport photos will need to be signed by the witness who signed your passport application form in Step 2.

Step 9

Provide proof of British citizenship. For this step you will need to provide your original certificate of British naturalization. No photocopies will be accepted, but all original documents included with your passport application with be returned to you with your passport.

Step 10

Enclose the ₤72 passport application processing fee and mail your completed application, proof of British citizenship and passport photo to your local Passport Check and Send office. A complete list of Passport Check and Send offices can be found on the Identity and Passport Service website. You will receive your passport by mail in four to six weeks.
