An alternative lifestyle is essentially any lifestyle which falls outside of what society refers to as "normal." Sometimes it is associated with groups of people who identify themselves within a matching subculture, such as "hippies" or "goths." However, the majority of the time, alternative lifestyles refer to the gay and lesbian community. Alternative lifestyle vacations are an increasing trend in the travel industry.
Sitges, Spain

Sitges is a small town located just outside of Barcelona, Spain. It's been a fishing village for the past two thousand years and has retained is the medieval aura. Although it appears to be old-fashioned with it's cobblestone streets and historical architecture, Sitges is considered cosmopolitan. There is a thriving gay and lesbian population here, making it a welcome place to vacation for those who are not heterosexual. Throughout the months of February and March, the town hosts a carnival-like festival full of parades, music and folk dancing, a tradition passed down for over 100 years.

Fire Island, New York

There is a small island off the coast of New York's Long Island referred to as "Fire Island." Over the years it has become an increasingly popular place for gay and lesbians to congregate. In fact, Fire Island is the oldest GLBTQ community located within the United States. The island itself is quaint and guests can enjoy wooden walkways, natural surroundings and a variety of restaurants, bars and clubs. The locals and guests alike have positive feelings toward those living an alternative lifestyle.

Mykonos, Greece

The Greek Islands are a popular place to for all travelers, but the island of Mykonos is especially ideal for someone planning an alternative lifestyle vacation. The scenery is postcard-worthy with clean, sandy beaches and blue oceans in every direction and is full of villages and historical sites. The island is also home to several gay and nude beaches and some of the most famous gay clubs in the world.
