Lake Cumberland is home to many types of fish.
Lake Cumberland spans parts of six counties in southern Kentucky and is popular with anglers. The lake covers more than 63,000 acres of land and is more than 100 feet deep in some areas. There are several varieties of fish native to the lake, including different species of trout and bass. Those successful at fishing in the lake know there are certain tips to keep in mind.
Right Time
Experienced fishermen will say there's no such thing as the right time to fish Lake Cumberland. They'll also point out that certain times of the year bring out more fish. The late spring and early summer are especially good because the fish begin spawning and moving deep into the water. Novice anglers should be aware of areas with underwater cliffs, visible by the cliff edges that rise slightly above the water.
Types of Fish
Those fishing in Lake Cumberland should be aware of the different types of fish found there. This determines the proper line weight to use and the right type of bait. Black crappie, striped bass, spotted bass and walleye are the more popular types of fish. The area is also home to rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, brook trout, brown trout and bluegill.
Right Spot
Finding the right spot is important when it comes to fishing in Lake Cumberland. Most of the fish varieties tend to favor the deeper parts of the lake, typically areas where the water is at least 30 feet deep. Fish also frequent areas where the water is fresh and clean, particularly around steams and creeks that lead off from the lake. Anglers should also pay attention to shady areas, where the fish like to hide.
Fishing Report
Like other fishing destinations, Lake Cumberland has its own fishing report available from 1fghp.com. Experienced anglers share their stories on catching fish in the lake, along with other tips. The site also lists information on the current weather conditions at the lake and spots where the fish have been biting. The report lets fishermen know exactly where to look for the most fish.
Guided Tours
Those interested in fishing Lake Cumberland should consider a guided tour, especially the first few times on the lake. The sheer size of the lake makes it difficult for some visitors to locate fish. Tours from Striper Fun Fishing, Gone Fishing and AJ's Guide Service are all good options. The Lake Cumberland Fishing Guide lists all guided services in the area, with contact information for each.
