Beach Camping
In Southern California, many activities on the beach are free. One free activity is to camp for up to 30 days at San Elijo State Beach, north of San Diego. This park, administered by the state of California, offers camping at the mountain level near the highway. Campers can descend a wooden staircase to gain direct access to the Pacific Ocean. The peak season is in the summer, and reservations are necessary during this busy time.
Rollerblading at Venice Beach
Venice Beach has attracted the Los Angeles crowd for many years, and rollerbladers and skaters have discovered this slice of paradise. This city is famous for people-watching opportunities along its busy streets. Rollerbladers stop and gawk at performers playing instruments, juggling, singing, miming and performing acrobatic feats. You also can meet fortune tellers, comedians, magicians and prophets. Venice Beach offers three miles of beach walkways and public roadways stretching from Santa Monica to Marina Del Rey. If you want to spend money, there are ample opportunities for shopping and dining.
Walking the Santa Monica Pier
The historic Santa Monica Pier is visited by people from around the globe who have seen this Southern California beach popularized in TV and film. Walking the pier is free. Visitors can enjoy carnival rides and games, including an antique carousel, a roller coaster and a Ferris wheel. The pier is also full of shops to browse and places to buy food and beverages. A children's playground and a Muscle Park on the beach are located next to the pier.
