When you set out on your visit to the Pocono Mountains in Western Pennsylvania, you may be aware of a host of outdoor activities that include camping, fishing, skiing and boating. But the area is also alive with rich local history, each small town or hamlet brimming over with secrets from the past. Consider these delightful historical mansions, museums and walking tours the next time you're in the Poconos.
Asa Packer Mansion
The Asa Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe, built in 1861, is an Italian-style villa with a small tower on top that offers a view looking down onto the town below. Originally the home of railroad magnet and philanthropist Asa Packer, Packer's daughter Mary willed the home to the Borough of Mauch Chunk in 1912 with all the original belongings. The 11,000-square-foot Victorian home was opened, unchanged, for public viewing in 1956.
