Things to Do on the Northern California Coast
To some, northern California is a different state from its more flashy, tempestuous and populated sibling to the south. To many, this is an absolute blessing and a great chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the cities, even for a short time. The fruits of northern California are many, especially along the beautiful and less-traveled coastal areas.
Alcatraz

Those wishing to visit the legendary prison will have to catch the ferry at Fisherman's Wharf on Pier 33. Now a historic site, Alcatraz served for years as a military base to guard the harbor, before being transformed into a military prison and finally a federal high-security prison. Alcatraz housed famed bad guys Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly, among others. Most famous of all--and still unsolved to all but the FBI--was the bold and well-executed escape of three inmates masterminded by Frank Morris in 1962. Also of note are the numerous reports that Alcatraz is haunted, which has led to organized tours and other fun pursuits for visitors.

Redwood National Park

Way up high in the northern portion of California is Redwood National Park. Though one of the smaller national parks in the state, this area contains over 40 percent of the world's largest trees--the redwoods. Located close to Crescent City and the town of Arcata, the park is littered with over 200 miles of hiking trails, bike trails and horse trails. The main attraction is--of course--the trees, but the oceanfront portion of the park is also a popular attraction because of its unobstructed beauty.

Mendocino Wineries

Halfway up the California coast between San Francisco and the small city of Eureka lies the town of Mendocino. Mendocino is synonymous with wine-making. Wineries come in all shapes and sizes in California, but Mendocino-area wineries are known for their exceptionally fertile soil and organic growing methods. The Navarro Winery, south along Pacific Coast Highway, produces everything from big, jammy Zinfandels to crisp, dry Chenin Blanc. The Husch Winery produces award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, while Fife Vineyards specialize in reds.
