Spring Break Ideas for Families in Michigan
Michigan is called the Great Lakes state, as it is surrounded by Lake Huron, Michigan, Superior and Erie. Michigan is full of things to do both in and out of the water. Many spring breakers head to Michigan to enjoy a day trip that is fun, educational and awe-inspiring. With everything from historical landmarks to parks, Michigan welcomes families with open arms.
Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is located between the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Mackinac is one of the largest tourist attractions in Michigan. This quaint little island is full of nostalgia and history. Stroll the streets by foot, horse or carriage, as there are no motor vehicles allowed anywhere on the island. Visit famed attractions such as Fort Michilimackinac, Arch Rock and The Grand Hotel. Enjoy fresh seafood and specialty shopping throughout the island. Spring is a good time to visit the island, as flowers and plants are in full bloom. Make sure to dress warmly, as the air is still very crisp and cool from March to the first of June.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan lies one of the secret wonders of the state---the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Here, families can spend their spring break taking in all 35 miles of the coastline. There are many things to explore such as forests, sand dunes and unspoiled beaches. Explore ancient glaciers that have left large, carved rocks jutting out of the waters, as well as great back country hiking trails. There are seven marked trails and over 43 miles of unmarked trails that are waiting to be explored.
Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn
In the heart of the "thumb" lies a German inspired town called Frankenmuth. This "Little Bavaria," as it is called, is lined with Swiss and German inspired architecture. Home to the largest Christmas Store on Earth, "Bronners," visitors can shop for Christmas any time of the year. Zehnder's is world famous for its homemade chicken dinners and offers affordable dining options for the entire family. The Bavarian Inn has its own indoor water attraction, including five indoor pools and a miniature golf course. This is a great stop for families who want to enjoy a German inspired atmosphere.
Greenfield Village
Located in the Motor City of Detroit, Greenfield Village embraces the foundation of the automotive industry in Michigan. Home of the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village takes visitors back in time to the turn of the century. There are over 90 buildings here that reflect the history of the state of Michigan and the Detroit area. There is also an IMAX theater that takes visitors on a virtual tour of the famed Ford Rouge Factory.
Adventure Island
Adventure Island Family Park is located near the city of Cadillac, Michigan. Here guests can engage in fun, family minded activities such as water slides, miniature golf, bumper boats, go-karts and batting cages. The Days Inn nearby offers travelers an affordable place to stay and rest while visiting the area. The nearby Camp Cadillac offers affordable family fun, like a petting zoo and a barrel train.
