Lake Tahoe in Winter, California
Homewood Mountain Ski resort is on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in California. It has 56 trails on 1,260 acres. Homewood is a smaller ski area than Squaw Valley, Boreal Ridge and Heavenly Valley, but that fact is part of its charm. The nearby town of Homewood offers a music festival, farmers markets, outdoor wedding ceremonies, and arts and crafts festivals in the summer.
Wows and Woes

Wows: All ski runs have stunning views of Lake Tahoe. Skiing through the trees is excellent, and the resort is among the least crowded in the area.

Woes: Homewood opens later in the season than other nearby ski areas. Management is not always customer-service oriented.

Insider Tips

Homewood is less crowded during the week. Except for the bar, there is virtually no nightlife at Homewood. The Tahoma Meadows Bed and Breakfast offers a gourmet breakfast in cottages without kitchens.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

I was skiing at Homewood with a group of friends when I fell and broke my ankle. The rescue team was quick to respond and was caring. The management offered me a free ticket for skiing in the future since I had just started skiing when I fell.

Bottom Line

Given the smaller crowds, Homewood is a good place for a family ski trip. It has short wait times in chair lift lines. Lessons are available at reasonable prices.
