Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the area. White Mountain National Forest, in particular, offers over a thousand miles of trails, scenic routes and great autumn colors. There are also 23 campgrounds, ski lanes and rock climbing opportunities in the hills. Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains have a road that allows drivers to make their way to the summit for breathtaking views of the surroundings. The shore of the lake has a small beach (swimming is allowed), picnic tables and a bathhouse.

There is also a longer, five-hour train ride known as the Notch Train service, which travels all the way up to Bretton Woods during the height of fall foliage season and allows visitors to experience the full wonder of the area. Mount Washington Valley Children's Museum

The museum focuses more on ongoing events and workshops than on permanent exhibits, so this is an ideal place to visit if you're looking for something involved and active for the kids to do. From kinder chemistry to a toddler music class, activities encompass almost every aspect of the arts and sciences. Visitors can also make their way up a treehouse to explore the secrets of the natural world.
