Dating from the late 1770s, one only has to close their eyes and let their mind wander through the pages of America's colonial era, Revolutionary War and Civil War to appreciate the conversations and social outings that have graced The Boxley's lovely rooms. The original structure, which is comprised of the kitchen and formal dining room and stands to the left of the stately main structure, pre-dates the establishment of the town of Madison. Named for President James Madison, the early days of the settlement were driven by the bateaus laden with supplies that sailed up and down the nearby confluence of the Dan and Mayo Rivers. Many original town subscribers had migrated from Virginia, whose borders lie only 11 miles north of The Boxley.
