The term Triangle was first coined to refer to the area*s three major universities: Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University. The three joined and created the Research Triangle Park, centered in southeast Durham. The Durham area is now known as Tobacco Road. While the tobacco industry initially dominated the city*s economy, it was soon rivaled by the establishment of multiple textile mills. Durham has a rich and vibrant art and cultural community. Events include jazz festivals, blues festivals, symphony concerts, art exhibitions, and a multitude of cultural expositions, including the American Dance Festival and the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
