What Are the Beaches in New Jersey?
Although New Jersey is known as the Garden State, it's also known as a
beach mecca. Along the coast of New Jersey, the Atlantic Ocean kisses numerous sandy
beaches and the accompanying boardwalks, each with its own unique spirit and culture. Beach season in New Jersey starts Memorial Day weekend and extends until Labor Day, so be sure to sample as many sunny spots as possible.
Atlantic City
Atlantic City is the Las Vegas of the East Coast, with a large array of casino hotels along a lengthy boardwalk. A popular site for shows, concerts and conventions, Atlantic City also boasts a large array of transportation options that include a NJ Transit train line.
Gunnison Beach, Sandy Hook
Gunnison is New Jersey's public nude beach. According to Friends of Gunnison, "Weekdays are much less crowded than weekends," with more singles and couples than on the weekend. Be ready to walk about a half mile to get to the beach from the $10 parking area, and be respectful of others who have been regulars of this prime spot for decades.
Long Beach Island
Long Beach Island, also known as LBI, is a popular destination for upper-class New Jersey beachgoers. More laid back than the Hamptons, LBI has a more preppy, family-oriented atmosphere. There's lots of shopping, good eating and fun clubs to hang out at. Many people rent houses and vacation for the whole season, so coordinate with others and get your own place.
Point Pleasant
Point Pleasant has a lengthy boardwalk full of games and beach food. The bulk of Point Pleasant is run by the Jenkinson family, who own the amusement park, several bars, and the popular Jenkinson's night club. The crowd at Point Pleasant is young and can be rowdy; MTV frequently runs promo events on the surf. There are also shows and fireworks displays on select nights.
Cape May
Home of New Jersey's beautiful "Painted Lady" beach houses, Cape May is the southernmost point of the state. Cape May is full of cute shops, bed and breakfast hotels and good restaurants. It's excellent for walking, and the brightly-painted, immaculately appointed historical homes make for terrific pictures.
