Portland, Oregon, is an excellent starting point for a weekend getaway. Within driving distance of Seattle and California, as well as other large cities like Eugene and Salem, there are loads of options for overnights, weekends and week-long vacations.
Wine Country

Less than an hour's drive south of Portland is Oregon's Willamette Valley, home to a thriving wine industry. Not only can you enjoy tastings and winery tours, as well as fine dining at many wineries, but the surrounding areas also are home to charming bed and breakfasts, small museums and intimate art galleries.

Ashland

Ashland, Oregon, is about 300 miles south of Portland, close to the Oregon/California border. It is a scenic drive, but this cozy community is also easily reached by local flight or train. Ashland is famous as the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, an annual celebration of the Bard that has grown to encompass the entire town and drama in all its forms. Visitors come from all over the world to appreciate some of the best Shakespearean performances in a beautiful, small-town setting. With sophisticated eateries, local wine and package deals available through local hotels and bed and breakfasts, Ashland is an excellent destination for a weekend or longer.

Oregon Coast

About an hour to the west of Portland, the Oregon Coast draws visitors from all over the country. Besides the beautiful, wind-swept coast itself, the Oregon Coast also offers attractions as varied as Indian casinos, aquariums, caves and massive sand dunes. Many small towns up and down the Oregon Coast offer peaceful accommodations and excellent restaurants, as well as outlet shopping, golf and sightseeing. The weather is less comforting in the winter, but the views are just as breathtaking, and the off-season is a great time to get excellent accommodation deals on the coast. Book a bed and breakfast on the water with a fireplace and watch the weather from the warmth of your room.
