Centrally located in the heart of Texas,
San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in America, and is the third-fastest growing city. With 300 days of sunshine annually, and an average temperature of 70 degrees, it's easy to see why more than 26 million people visit the city each year.
History
Originally an Indian village, the Spanish settled in the area in the 18th century and established the five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River. The Alamo was the site of a pivotal battle in Texas' independence from Mexico. By 1845, Texas joined the union as the 28th state.
Attractions
From the Alamo to the Missions, from SeaWorld to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, there are plenty of attractions and activities. With more than 3,500 animals, the San Antonio Zoo is the third largest in the U.S. and features more than 230 endangered species. Visit the Tower of the Americas at HemisFair Park for the best views of San Antonio.
The River Walk
In the heart of downtown San Antonio is the River Walk, the No. 1 entertainment destination in Texas. Enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the river and explore some of the many shops and restaurants located along the river bank. A River Walk development project that will extend the River Walk from two to 13 miles, to the city's Mission district, is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
Outdoor Activities
San Antonio includes 68 miles of urban hiking and biking trails and more than 11,000 acres of urban parks. San Pedro Park, the second-oldest park in the country, is also located in the city. For golf lovers, San Antonio is home to more than 40 public and private golf courses.
Shopping
With family-owned cafes, working artists and more, the Market Square area is alive with activity. With 32 shops, the El Mercado shopping district is the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, and there are an additional 80 specialty shops at the Farmers Market Plaza.
