Tourism in the Pocono Mountains
For the Pocono Mountains---a four county area in northeast Pennsylvania---tourism is a major part of its economy. The area lures in visitors with the Pocono 500, proximity to New York, fresh air and natural beauty.
Beginnings

Up until the end of Second World War, the Pocono Mountains existed as a farming community. An enterprising resident took advantage of the onslaught of honeymooning visitors, creating the first honeymoon hotel called Farm on the Hill.

Magazine Worthy

Just shy of 20 years later, a resort named Caesars Cove Haven installed red, heart-shaped tubs. Featured in Life Magazine, the hotel earned the Pocono Mountains the slogan---"the honeymoon capital of the world."

Transition

In the last quarter of the 20th century, honeymooners largely found other more exotic locations to spend the first few weeks of married life. Visitors seek respite from the city, and the activities reflect the new desires.

Peak Season

During the summer and fall months, the Pocono Mountains come alive with hikers, campers and boaters.

Twentieth-first Century

In the early part of the 21st century, the recession negatively affected tourism in the Poconos. However, that's pretty much how tourism was affected nationwide. The Pocono Mountains are standing strong.
