There are few places in the United States as rich in culture and history as Washington, DC. The nation's capital is the center of the political universe and boasts an endless array of attractions and activities. It can be hard to prioritize the must-sees when planning a trip, so here's a list of the top 10 things to do in Washington, DC, to make the process easier.
National Mall and Memorial Parks

Established in 1965, the National Mall and Memorial Parks honor America's war veterans while celebrating freedom and equality. Highlights include the Washington Monument, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Smithsonian

The Smithsonian is the world's largest museum complex and research organization. Comprised of 19 museums, nine research centers, and the National Zoo, over 26 million visitors flock to the cultural hub each year. The Natural History Museum and the National Air and Space Museum are especially popular and host IMAX movie screenings regularly.

The Three Houses of Government

The White House, Capitol and Supreme Court are the political trifecta of the United States that house the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Despite increased security regulations after September 11, 2001, each building hosts tours for the public and provides in-depth history lessons perfect for both children and adults.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

The living memorial to the Holocaust touches visitors to the core with its painful historical accuracy and moving tribute to the victims and survivors of the Nazi regime. Since its dedication in 1993, the museum has, in its own words, aimed to "stimulate leaders and citizens to confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity and strengthen democracy."

The Kennedy Center

Since its opening in 1971, the Kennedy Center has hosted some of the greatest performers in world. Shows include ballet, jazz, opera, modern dance and theater, as well as the National Symphony. Tickets can be purchased in advance, and free shows are available daily at the Millennium Stage.

The U.S. Botanic Garden

Located on the Capitol Grounds, the U.S. Botanic Garden is a larger-than-life greenhouse run by Congress. Multiple rooms simulate varying habitats, and its close proximity to the National Mall makes it a welcome diversion from the rest of the history-heavy attractions in the area.

Old Town Alexandria

One of the original political and commercial hubs of the founding fathers, Old Town Alexandria is a little slice of history. Plan to visit Robert E. Lee's childhood home and that of his father, General Harry Lee, and check out the nearby Christ Church where George Washington worshiped. Old Town's restaurant scene has also garnered praise in recent years, so make room for a meal when visiting.

Great Falls Park

The beautiful 800-acre park sits a mere 15 miles from the Capitol and overlooks the Potomac River. While some visitors come to the park to simply relax and enjoy nature, others make sure to see the Robert E. Lee Memorial, Claude Moore Farm and Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Georgetown

Situated comfortably on the Potomac waterfront, Georgetown is home to some of the city's best shops, restaurants and bars. The embassies of France, Mongolia, Sweden, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela add to the area's cultural diversity, and historical buffs are attracted to Old Stone House, the oldest standing building in Washington, DC. Georgetown University also sits on the western edge of the neighborhood.

Eastern Market

DC's oldest continually operated fresh food public market dates back to 1873 and offers a wide selection of handmade pottery, jewelry, ceramics, crafts and furniture. Over 175 exhibitors from Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia flock to Capitol Hill every Saturday and Sunday, and the crab cakes and blueberry pancakes cannot be missed.
