From California to Maine, an estimated fifty hotels are rumored to have paranormal phenomena, and some of these places have rich and long histories. Taking a United States tour of haunted hotels can give you thrills and chills, and it may even bring you closer to the realm of the unknown.
Roosevelt Hotel
The Roosevelt Hotel was opened in 1927
The Roosevelt Hotel was opened in 1927 in Hollywood, California. It's been used by numerous celebrities since the 1930's, and it was also home to the first two Academy Award ceremonies. The ghost of famous Hollywood actor, Montgomery Clift, is said to be a permanent resident of room 928 of this historical hotel, and patrons are said to have felt his presence while staying there.

Located in the beautiful city of Monterey, California is the historic Hotel Del Monte. It was once considered the most luxurious of hotels, and it was built in the 1800s. According to visitors of this hotel, Charles Crocker, a historic gentleman and politician from the 1800's, can still be spotted haunting the main lobby and dining hall of the property.

The Gold Hill Hotel is one of the most historical buildings in Virginia City, Nevada. Since 1859, the building has been a boarding house and a private residence. It has been owned as a hotel several times throughout its long history. As of 2009, the hotel is still operational, and patrons have claimed to witness several apparitions, including a young woman named Rosie; she is believed to be a ghost and a prostitute from the hotel's earlier days. People who stay in room 4 are said to meet this ghostly lady of the night.

Goldfield Hotel

This abandoned hotel is a condemned property, and visitors are not able to stay overnight. Visiting this Nevada attraction is spooky enough without staying. It was built over an abandoned gold mine in the early 1900's. It is rumored that room 109 is haunted by the apparition of a pregnant woman. The town of Goldfield is right outside of Las Vegas, and it's practically uninhabited.

Stanley Hotel
The Stanley motel inspired the Stephen King novel, "The Shining"
The world-famous Stanley Hotel is located in Estes Park, Colorado. This historical building became the setting for the novel "The Shining" by Stephen King. It was also the setting of the movie adaptation of the novel, starring Jack Nicholson. According to Stephen King, he was visited by the ghost of a hotel maid in room 217, and other patrons have claimed to experience similar occurrences.

According to patrons, the ghost of a three-year-old little boy can be seen wandering the halls of the 14th floor. According to history, a young boy that matches the apparition's description was killed in a equestrian accident on the property in the 1800's.

This hotel is located in Prescott, Arizona, and it was built in the early 1800's. Rumor has it, the ghosts of Abby Byr and her cat haunt the property in search of her husband. In the 1920's, Abby Byr sent her husband out for medicine, and he never came back. Abby refused to eat and drink until she passed away. This hotel has been featured on television shows as being on of the most haunted hotels in the United States.
