Tips on Moving to Chicago
Chicago, nicknamed the Windy City, is in Illinois. It's a bustling city in the Midwest. Moving to Chicago can be an overwhelming endeavor. But it doesn't have to be that difficult and the potential rewards are high.
Winter Wardrobe
If you come from a part of the world that isn't used to cold weather, you may want to consider purchasing a winter wardrobe before you move. This is especially recommended if you are moving during the cold season, which begins in mid-November and lasts through March. Snow is a common sight during these months. Even when there isn't snow on the ground the temperatures can be low. Long pants and shirts, sweatshirts, a heavy coat, gloves and a hat are a few items to consider in your move.
Public Transportation
Chicago has a comprehensive public transportation system--the Chicago Transit Authority. If you're not used to public transportation the system may be overwhelming. However,, it's easy to get the hang of and completely worth using. You'll save time (Chicago traffic can be dreadful) and money on gas by using CTA. Study the transportation map and take advantage of this useful resource.
Get a Chicago Card
Many people who are new to Chicago are unaware of the CTA Chicago card. This card can be loaded with cash whenever you need to use it. Purchase your card anywhere you see a CTA sign; most convenience stores have them. Once your card has cash on it, you can swipe it whenever you enter or exit the public transportation system. Consider a Humidifier
The air in Chicago is very dry and for those who are used to high levels of humidity, this can cause a problem. A humidifier will be easy to find in Chicago, but if you can, bring one with you to save yourself the hassle of trying to locate one in a new city. You'll especially need it in fall and winter. Dry air will affect your throat, skin and hair, so drink plenty of fluids during this time and use extra moisturizers.
