In addition to the popular
New York City attractions such as going to a Broadway show, the Empire State Building, shopping at Bloomingdales andFAO Schwartz, and walking through Central Park, there are other interesting ways to enjoy this metropolitan area. Visitors can look at New York as it is represented in popular culture, go to entertainment venues or walk to undiscovered places in the city.

African Burial Ground
The African Burial Ground represents African-American history in New York City. Preserving this area began in 1991, when excavators working on the new federal building found skeletal remains of more than 400 men, women and children dating back to the 17th and 18th century. The African Burial Ground covers 6.6 acres of New York in Lower Manhattan outside the boundaries of the New Amsterdam settlement. For more than 100 years, the area where the unmarked graves were located was developed or used as landfill. Now, the remains have been re-interred and the burial ground is a designated National Monument.

Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge
Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is something every New York visitor must do. Many people may not realize they can walk across this long suspension bridge that has been a part of New York's landscape since the late 1800s. PlanetEye City Guide website says that approximately 5,000 pedestrians and 2,500 cyclists use the bridge for their daily commute. The 2-mile, wooden walkway is raised above traffic, and people ascend a flight of stairs to reach the top of the Brooklyn Bridge. While many people go atop the Empire State Building to view the city, those who walk across the Brooklyn Bridge see Lower Manhattan, Governors Island, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. At the end of the bridge, people visit the stores and restaurants at Pier 17 on the Manhattan side of the bridge or eat a slice of pizza at Grimaldi's Pizzeria on the Brooklyn side. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is free.
