Things to Do in Southwest Florida
Southwest Florida may not have the amusement parks and animated characters of the touristy areas such as
Orlando, but it more than makes up for this in beautiful
beaches and quaint seaside towns. Enjoy a peaceful retreat or tourist hot spot without a shortage of great food and entertainment. Southwest Florida is an ideal area for family
vacations,
romantic get-a-ways or a holiday with close friends.
Go Shelling on Sanibel Island
Seeing Sanibel for the first time gives meaning to the phrase, "Now this is a vacation." Paths wind around the island along the roads allowing visitors to leave their cars behind, rent a bike and visit one of many inviting little beach shops. You'll have several beaches to choose from and remember to take along cash in small bills because you will have to pay for parking. The island's beaches are known worldwide for their shells, but get up and comb them early for the best selection. When the hunger hits, be sure to head to Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger for a hearty burger and fries.
Watch a Sunset on Captiva Island
Not far from Sanibel sits Captiva Island, a smaller tropical paradise with white sand beaches that are associated with historical tales about the pirates that once explored there. This is the most beautiful place in the area for sunrises and sunsets. Head out to the five-mile beach and settle in for a spectacular display of color as the sun melts into the horizon. Be sure to keep your eye out on the water. It is not uncommon to have a few dolphins swim by as the sun goes down, creating an even more breathtaking scene.
Join the Crowds at Fort Myers Beach
If you are looking for that touristy, high-energy beach vibe, it can be found at Fort Myers Beach. During high travel season there is rarely a bare spot on the beach. If you are not staying in the area, parking spots can go fast so get there early. In addition to lots run by the city, there are several grassy areas, turned into parking lots which charge a daily fee. Take a walk down the beach and head out to the fishing pier. Be sure to keep your eyes on the shallow parts of water as stingrays enjoy hanging out in the area. If you enjoy Greek cuisine, stop by the Plaka Restaurant near the pier for a tasty gyro and prime beachside seating, great for people-watching.
Visit Venice
Venice is a gorgeous, historic beach town just one hour north of Fort Myers. Caspersen Beach is known as a prime spot for finding prehistoric shark's teeth, marking Venice the Shark Tooth Capital of the world. In fact, if you visit in August, you might just get the opportunity to attend the annual Shark Tooth and Seafood festival. The downtown area of the city has streets lined with beautifully manicured landscaping under towering palm trees. Mostly housed in historic buildings, shops have an old town feel so inviting that it is difficult to resist the urge to look around. Swing in an old-fashioned shop for some ice cream on a summer day, or if you are in the mood for a hot dog head out to Anita's Sand Castle for the World Famous Beach Dog.
