Lake Tahoe is a popular travel destination that is located along the border of two states--California and Nevada. There is no shortage of fun things to do and see while in Lake Tahoe, from engaging in the countless recreational activities (like whitewater rafting and hiking) and visiting historical and cultural sites. If you are in the South Shore area of Lake Tahoe, there are also a lot of great things to discover.
Horsetail Falls
Horsetail Falls is a stunning, cascading waterfall that looks particularly wonderful during the spring time, when the snow has all melted. This is a great hiking location, and the sight of the water rushing down the mountain is absolutely unforgettable. Climbing up the mountain to get to Horsetail Falls (alongside the creek) is rigorous, but the views at the top will be panoramic and worth every single second.
Nevada Beach
Nevada beach spans seven miles. At certain points, the beach is a impressive 300 yards in width. This is a great beach if you are interested in camping (the camping areas are towards the back part of the beach, in the more forested sections). It also is a wonderful site to go kiteboarding. If you simply want to relax on the beach, go sunbathing and maybe enjoy some swimming in the water, Nevada Beach is good for that as well.
Horizon Casino Resort
The Horizon Casino resort is a great place to go gambling and indulge in entertainment. The casino spans 42,000 square feet and is full of slot games and table games as well. Whether you want to play blackjack, table poker, poker pai gow, Let it Ride, craps or video poker, the resort has it all. Be sure to check out some of the exciting entertainment options, including shows like Carnival Cabaret.
Genoa Courthouse Museum
The Genoa Courthouse Museum is a small museum that was the site of the first courthouse in the state of Nevada. There is also a prison on the premises. In existence since 1856, this museum details the history of the Douglas County area, going back to the pioneer era up to the modern day. Walking through the Genoa Courthouse Museum is like taking a time machine into Nevada's rich history.
Skiing
During the winter months, skiing is one of the most popular recreational activities in the South Shore area of Lake Tahoe. One excellent ski resort is called Sierra-At-Tahoe, in Twin Bridges, California. This ski resort receives approximately 480 inches of snowfall a year. The slopes are protected here. The resort is very close to Huckleberry Canyon and various terrain parks.
