San Francisco is best known for its parks, bridges and multicultural venues. At Christmastime, however, the city unifies itself for a major celebration that sparks lights and musical events from every corner. Whether you're looking for something traditional, live shows or a bit of history, this is a city that truly embraces the spirit of the season.
Christmas Lights

There are over a dozen spots around the city where locals and tourists alike congregate to get a bright peek into the Christmas spirit. San Francisco's main tree is located at the San Francisco City Hall. The lighting ceremony is held on different days every year, but usually happens during the first week of December. Macy's also sponsors a tree lighting event, which happens in Union Square. Nearby, Macy's own windows come alive with Christmas decorations every December. Other places to see holiday lights include the Embarcadero Center and holiday skating rink, the Yerba Buena Gardens,Pier 39 and Golden Gate Park (across McLaren Lodge).

Dickens' Christmas Fair

Held every year at the Cow Palace Exhibition Halls at 2600 Geneva Avenue, this is a must-see for the whole family. The fair is basically a representation of what a London town in the time of Dickens would have looked like. Lots of light, costumed characters, street food and local shops are spread over 90,000 square feet. Open on weekends from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the fair offers a chance to walk around, shop and get lost in the architecture and time period or a chance to stop by to attend one of the many shows, which includes everything from live music to puppet plays to chimney sweep performances. Expect to encounter Tiny Tim, Scrooge and Father Christmas as well. Arts and crafts are sold at the many themed shops along the streets and visitors can also try many food specialties of the time, including Ales and fish and chips.

Fisherman's Wharf

Visitors first arrive to Fisherman's Wharf to see the lighting of the tree at the beginning of December, but the real festivities don't start here until the week of the 20th. From shopping specials to bright lights on every building around, this is a great spot to celebrate the season. There are major celebrations even after Christmas (and also long before), as Fisherman's Wharf holds a Holiday Festival of Lights between November 26 and December 31. Live music, carolers, decorations and special events are held here on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
