Things to Do in Muskegon Michigan
Muskegon is located in the mid-section of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, on the western side of the state. Nestled among the sand dunes of Lake Michigan, Muskegon offers a lot of things to do both near the water and on dry land. From amusement parks to historical sites to explore with family and friends, Muskegon is a good location for all-around Michigan fun for all ages.
Michigan Adventures
Michigan Adventures is an amusement park that has several rides for kids and thrill seekers of all ages. Rides such as the Snake Pit and Cyclone Zone are perfect for those needing that extra adrenaline rush. There are also more family-friendly rides for the little ones such as the Junior Go Karts and the Tilt-O-Whirl. Michigan Adventures also has a water park next door called Wild Water Adventures. Here, the entire family can enjoy water slides, water rides, wave pools and a winding lazy river. The cost is fairly affordable at $25 per person for an all-day pass to one park.
Clay Avenue Cellars
Clay Avenue Cellars is located within the city limits of Muskegon. This is an old building that once housed the historic Freres Gas Station. The popular winery is one of the main tourist attractions in the city. Sampling of some of Michigan's own natural fruit wine is a treat to remember. Inside the station there is an exhibition or local artwork that includes jewelry, stained glass, oil paintings and watercolors. This is a great place to sample and buy some of the best wines in the state and explore the work of local artisans.
Pere Marquette Beach
The Pere Marquette beach is a breathtaking beach located on the outskirts of Muskegon. The Lake Michigan beach has been named as one of the three cleanest beaches in the state. This beach is perfect for strolling, sunbathing or enjoying the water. It is a public beach so there is no fee to gain access. The beach is also known for some of the most gorgeous sunsets on the west coast of the state---which makes for a tranquil close to a busy day.
Getty Drive-in Theater
For those who enjoy reminiscing of days gone by, visiting the Getty Drive-in Theater will bring back some good ol' memories. This historic drive-in theater is one of only 500 still operating the United States and 10 in the state of Michigan. Opened back in 1949, this theater was one of the most popular hangouts for teenagers in the area. Today, the car windows can still be rolled down and movies can be enjoyed on the wide screen.
Great Lakes Naval and Memorial Museum
The Great Lakes Naval and Memorial Museum is another "must see" when visiting the Muskegon area. This is an historical experience that is beneficial to those of all ages. At the memorial---guests are allowed to board historic Navy vessels. The USS Silversides and ISCGC McLane are a submarine and boat from WWII that are put on display. A gift shop and educational theater are on premises to inform and entertain those interested in area history.
