Things to Do in Mackinaw City, Michigan
Despite its name, Mackinaw City is a village. With a total population of 859, this small Michigan destination attracts tons of visitors every year due to its proximity to Mackinac Island and the many ferries leaving daily for the sea. While many tourists are just passing by on their way to the island, this cozy, old-fashioned village has lots to offer as well.
Colonial Michlimackinac

A reconstructed 18th-century fort as well as an archaeological dig, Colonial Michlimackinac is a destination for the whole family. Re-enactment groups present many events throughout the year, and visitors can attend a period wedding, eat fresh-baked bread or see a cannon being fired. The 13 reconstructed structures within the fort give visitors a feel for what life was like here until the original fort burned down in 1781. Because of the ongoing archaeological dig on site, items exhibited change constantly as well, putting the current museum's collection at over 1 million items.

Old Mackinac Point Light

A working lighthouse until 1957, Old Mackinac Point Light is a cylindrical tower made of brick and Indiana limestone, which makes it quite unusual (most lighthouses are rectangular) and a sight in itself. Visitors today can take a tour of the light keeper's quarters, climb the steps to the top of the tower and try one of the many hands-on exhibits about maritime history. Michilimackinac State Park surrounds the lighthouse and offers picnicking and birdwatching, as well as a chance to drive through Mackinac Bridge, an impressive 8,614 feet long.

Historical Mill Creek

Mill Creek and the land around it attracts lots of visitors and locals every day, who come to see the working 18th-century sawmill, and explore the 625 acres of the park around it (full of hiking trails and scenic spots) and the many visitor stops within the park. For those who want thrills, Historical Mill Creek has a zip line cutting through the tree canopies where daring visitors can soar through the air hanging from a rope. There are also reconstructions of historical buildings, costumed guides and re-enactments.
