Galveston is a city located in Texas' picturesque Gulf Coast region, not far from
Houston. It is located on Galveston Island and is one of the most popular vacation areas in the entire state. Like a lot of other cities in Texas, there is no shortage of exciting things to do and see while in Galveston. From a historical district downtown, to beautiful gardens and waterparks, Galveston is a great place to go for a Texan vacation.
Moody Mansion Museum
This mansion was once the sprawling, palatial residence of one of Texas' most prestigious and well known families. The Moodys were a family involved in banking, hotels and cotton. Tourists will be able to get an up close look at the beautiful stained glass, carved decorations and coffered ceilings that were so indicative of the turn of the twentieth century. A lot of the Moodys' authentic possessions remain prominently on display in the mansions' many rooms.
Big Reef Nature Park
This vast nature park is a fun and enjoyable way for tourists to experience Texas' Gulf Coast at its finest. Part of East beach, the Big Reef Nature Park displays a wide array of the region's creatures, including Gulf Coast birds like plovers, Northern Gannets and jaegers. Visitors should make a point to check out the East Lagoon Nature Trail, which is a glorious tidal marsh full of wildlife and vegetation unique to the coastal area.
The Bishop's Palace
This is a wonderful historical attraction full of nostalgia and novelty. This palace is one of the United States' premier architectural constructions. This palace is adorned with woodwork made out of maple, satinwood, rosewood and white mahogany. Make sure to check out the international fireplaces that are on display in many of the palace's rooms, as well as the prizewinning ballroom mantle.
Galveston Island State Park
This is a massive, 2,000-acre park that is ideal for outdoorsy types. If you want to go camping or even picnicking (while relishing in the beautiful natural scenery the park has to offer), the Galveston Island State Park is perfect for you. There are a lot of fun activities to engage in here as well, including hiking, surf fishing, going biking on trails and simply exploring the environment of the Gulf Coast. There is a lot of wildlife on display at the park, like armadillos, tidal birds and even raccoons.
