Things to Do in Downtown Orlando, Florida

The name Orlando is synonymous with big theme parks such as Disney World. Thousands of tourists flock there each year but rarely see much of the city itself. Part of the trouble is that Disney has worked its way into every corner of the local tourism. It's almost impossible to even go out for a drink without seeing Mickey Mouse branded somewhere. If you look hard enough, there is plenty to see and do in Orlando without Disney. Home to a modern downtown and active nightlife, Orlando has plenty to offer those who need a break from mouse fatigue.
Downtown Media Arts Center

The Downtown Media Arts Center is one of the most distinctive movie theaters in the country. It is housed in a big, green building with a gothic facade. While the first floor of the building acts as an art gallery for Orlando artists, the second floor is home to an 80 seat movie theater that shows cult films, independent features and shorts. Sometimes, the center hosts "Film Slams" where the audience votes for their favorite one. The Center also hosts live music on Sunday nights in its cafe.

Among the artists featured in the museum are John Singer Sargent, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Robert Rauschenberg, Pat Steir and Dennis Oppenheim. Lake Eola

Lake Eola is a man made lake that since its inception in 1888, has served a recreation area for downtown Orlando. Previously a zoo and a race-track, Lake Eola now serves as a relaxing green space. Home to an amphitheater, shops, cafes and playground is a shady place to go to escape a hot Florida day. For those who like the water, you can take a gondola cruise or rent a paddleboat. There is also a paved path for bikers and joggers the circles the lake. In the spring, there are various art festival and outdoor movies held at Lake Eola.
