Sightseeing in Washington
Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the
United States. Many people visit Washington to see its historic locations, such as the White House and the Smithsonian Institution. While those are indeed important sights to see, there are also other things to see and experience in Washington, and these things require little, if any, money.
Lisner Auditorium
Lisner Auditorium is on the campus of George Washington University. It is the site for free concerts throughout the year. The United States Air Force Band Jazz Ensemble is among the groups that perform at the Lisner Auditorium.
National Museum of the American Indian
This museum honors the culture and history of the Native Americans. The museum regularly offers free events such dance festivals and performances by classical musicians and native composers.
Rock Creek Park
At Rock Creek Park, people can see the stars quite literally. Rock Creek Park is the location of a planetarium--the only one that is maintained by the National Park Service.
Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Want to make money? At the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, you can get a free tour showing how money is made. You even can try your hand at making money.
National Cathedral
Tourists can explore the grounds of this famous cathedral,which also happens to be one of the largest cathedrals on the planet, for free. For a small fee, tourists can also take tours inside of the cathedral. One tour discusses the history of gargoyles.
The Willard InterContinental Hotel
Tourists can visit the lobby of this famous hotel for free. In this hotel, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic "was written by Julia Ward Howe. This hotel is also where the Rev. Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his "I Have a Dream" speech.
Library of Congress
Many have come to this library to do important research. Tourists can visit for free. Exhibits included a recreation of the original library of third U.S. president, Thomas Jefferson. The library also sometimes offers free lectures, poetry readings and concerts.
Walking Tours
Washington, D.C., is a city that should, if possible, be explored on foot. Walking allows visitors to see famous locations such as Capitol Hill, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Word War II Memorial up close. Tourists have the option of seeing sights such as these on their own; there are also many walking tours that are available for reasonable fees.
